Trip #2 – England!

Firstly, I know I haven’t finished the Eurotrip entry, but I’m going to finish up to nowadays before I go back and tie up that end!

London

London

This trip has 4 little chapters, the first one comes down to a combination complete stupidity and complete and utter luck, In retrospect though I can almost look at it without cringing.

1. Leaving the country, 23/05/08

I don’t like being late, but I have an awful tendency of arriving late. Just ask any ex girlfriend. Anyway, I’m gonna skip details and just tell you two things, I arrived at the airport 3 hours before the flight left, and in the end we found ourselves sprinting down the terminal Amazing Race style, getting to the gate and politely begging to be let on the plane with about 30 seconds to spare. They radioed the pilot and I swear I could hear him thinking in the awful static that ensued. Finally they said they could let us on. We entered the plane to an announcement – “Here are those missing Australians we waited for”. Embarrassing. I don’t think I’ll ever be late again.

2. Cheltenham: 23rd to the 27th of June

I have two very good friends who live at Cheltenham so I went there for a week and stayed with one of them at his family home. I spent the week exploring Cheltenham, catching up, meeting friends and making a couple of new friends, counseling good friends and visiting Blenheim Palace and Shakespeare’s home, Stratford Upon Avon. Was great to catch up with people who I hadn’t seen in ages.

3. London – The most expensive city in the World?

Chilling in London

Chilling in London

I spent the weekend in London, doing all the tourist sights and enjoying the prices of everything from food to the metro and buses. By chance, my dad was in England at the same time and we met on Sunday to explore the Tate Modern and the Southbank Centers Psycho-Buildings expo. I hadn’t been in London in a long time but being there again was fantastic!

4. Lewes 1st to the 7th of July – Family, friends and bacon sandwiches

Being half English I have relatives who live in Southern England. My dad was staying here with my aunt, Mary, so I popped down to live with them for the second week. Here in this town there is the most amazing cafe named Bill’s which makes a breakfast to die for. I hadn’t eaten there in over 2 years but it’s just as good as I remember it. I can’t wait to get back there for a bacon sandwich.

Crop Circle Hunting

Crop Circle Hunting

My dad and I took a hire car and spent several days hunting crop circles that took to the pattern of pi, visiting relatives and family friends, fossil hunting and walking around forests and estates that interest us. It was fantastic to have a family dinner with the whole side of my family who I haven’t seen in ages. Also had fun bowling with my cousin on her 18th :)

If you read this Mary & Co, thank you for letting me stay with you guys for the week! I had a fantastic time :)

So England came and went quickly, and while it was fun it was also an interesting milestone because I missed being in France – I missed the challenge and the humour that comes from a language barrier and I missed waking up and feeling like I was on exchange – a feeling I can’t really describe.
